Chapter 23

Cain

I wanted to scream, to pound my fists into Malachi’s skull until it crushed beneath my fingers, to rip his wings from his back and watch rivers of blood pour from the open wounds.

Instead, I inhaled and used my power to calm my nerves.

Samael re-appeared two seconds after leaving with Phoebe in his arms. The sight caused another twinge of anger to squeeze my heart. I should’ve been the one to take her home.

“Malachi, why are you still here?” Samael, Lucian’s Angel of Death, raised an eyebrow and propped a hand on his hip. “Did I not make myself clear?”

With a baleful glare thrown my way, Malachi blinked away.

“There. Much better.” Using the tip of a finger, Samael stroked the upper ridge of a wing, and the movement caused little ripples of silver to sparkle from underneath the larger, darker feathers. “It’s so tedious to play babysitter between you two.”

“What do you want, Samael?” Though I knew his arrival had probably saved both my life and Phoebe’s, I tired of the games. I’d already been proven weak, a liar, and evil in her eyes, and seeing my rescuer brought it all home. How could I ever hope to beat them in my weakened, human state?

If I’d had my own Chosen status and all its perks, I could’ve beaten Malachi and saved Phoebe. Yet my wings depended solely on not rescuing Phoebe, but condemning her.

A dull headache throbbed at the front of my skull.

“Let’s go inside, shall we? Some might enjoy roughing it out in the middle of nowhere, but I prefer the comforts of the indoors.” He marched toward the cave opening, the bottom of his massive wings skimming a few inches above the ground. “Coming?”

With no other choice, I followed, keeping a loose grip on my power. The Chosen could never be trusted, especially when they pretended to be on my side. Samael had never gone out of his way to belittle me over the years, but he’d never intervened either.

As we descended the stairs, I let my thoughts drift to Phoebe. Now that she remembered our first meeting, how could I repair the damage?

Why does it matter? I can’t keep her. Frustrated and miserable, I slogged down the metal staircase, each thump of my shoe a dull clang like the shutting of a coffin lid. I reached the last step and strode toward the kitchen.

Samael smiled and dropped onto the sand-colored suede couch then propped his boots onto the coffee table. “Be a good boy and bring me some of the wine you keep at the back of the fridge. The good stuff, not the crap found at a dollar store.”

How did he know...? I grimaced. He’s been here before. But why?

Exasperated, I grunted then grabbed two wine glasses, retrieved the cold bottle of wine, and slammed the refrigerator door shut. “Would you like me to run out and get you some gouda cheese? Or maybe some other expensive, fancy shit to go with it?” I pictured feeding him some casu martzu still filled with maggot larvae.
